The Story of Welcoming

Accomplishments

Below are a few of the many instances of success within the Welcoming America Network:

  • Welcoming America estimates that the network impacted about 1.8 million Americans in 2010.
  • Welcoming resolutions have been passed in seven communities: Wilder, ID; Birmingham, AL; and the Massachusetts towns and cities of Arlington, Boston, Cambridge, Great Barrington, North Adams, and Pittsfield. The combined population of these Welcoming communities is 1,069,832.

Below are some examples of accomplishments of its affiliates:

Tennessee: Welcoming Tennessee

  • Welcoming Tennessee was recognized for its outstanding work when it received the E. Pluribus Unum Award for outstanding immigrant integration from the Migration Policy Institute in 2009.
  • Welcoming Tennessee has trained hundreds of volunteer presenters – known as ambassadors – who have helped positively change the perceptions of thousands of Tennesseans across the state. The campaign has also succeeded in attracting thousands of Tennessee residents to support the campaign, including many leaders within the state.
  • With the leadership of the Nashville Welcoming committee – the Coalition for Education on Immigration – Welcoming Tennessee contributed to a change in the public dialog that helped steer Nashville away from becoming the largest city in the country to pass a divisive “English Only” ordinance.
  • Instead, Nashville was named the friendliest city in the country by Travel and Leisure Magazine in 2009, and Nashville’s immigrant community is now more integrated into the cultural and civic life of the city than ever.
  • Statewide polling by Middle Tennessee State University has demonstrated a significant increase in positive opinions towards immigrants since Welcoming Tennessee was launched in 2005.

Massachusetts: Welcoming Massachusetts

  • Welcoming Massachusetts has received over 6,600 signatures in support of its campaign, the endorsement of over 50 elected officials, and had Welcoming resolutions passed in support of the campaign in 7 cities and towns. Click here to see the Welcoming resolution passed by the city of Pittsfield in Western Massachusetts.
  • Welcoming MA is planning to start a new phase of the project focusing on two communities outside of Boston that are economically depressed, and have large immigrant populations.

Idaho: Welcoming Idaho

  • Publically launched 10 ads on bus benches throughout Boise; 2 billboards in Burley; and 2 billboards in Moscow (Northern Idaho). All three launches received significant press coverage. Each local campaign has earned media in the major news outlets in the state in the form of news coverage and the publication of opinion editorials from local public officials.
  • In February 2009, the city of Wilder (about one hour from Boise) adopted a resolution affirming Wilder as a Welcoming city where all residents are treated with dignity and respect.
  • In the summer of 2009, Welcoming Idaho partnered with the University of Idaho to conduct a “pre survey” of Latah County residents and their attitudes toward immigrants. The survey found that most residents support providing a path to citizenship, but there remains many misconceptions about immigrants.Post polling will be performed after extensive Welcoming work in Latah County
