Call for Applications - Welcoming Network Scholarship for Creative Placemaking

Timothy Walden | February 25, 2019

ArtPlace America and Welcoming America are pleased to offer a new opportunity for local arts and culture leaders  to participate in Welcoming America’s Welcoming Network. Through a new Creative Placemaking Scholarship program, selected organizations will have the opportunity to draw on the tools and resources available to Welcoming Network members while acting as peer leaders -- sharing good ideas and receiving recognition in local, national and global settings for their arts-driven immigrant inclusion and welcoming efforts.

Scholarship applications are due Friday, March 15th. The application form can be found here.

Background: ArtPlace America’s Partnership with Welcoming America

At a time when the nation is challenged to bridge divides across lines of difference, ArtPlace America and Welcoming America have partnered to deepen collaboration across the arts and culture and immigrant integration sectors by lifting up local work that is happening at this intersection, and by strengthening connections between local arts and immigrant inclusion initiatives. We are interested in exploring and scaling creative placemaking practices that explicitly seek to build communities that are inclusive of immigrants and refugees, or to achieve other goals related to immigrant integration and belonging.

The Welcoming Network Scholarship for Creative Placemaking is the first of several projects to be rolled out this year as part of this partnership.

What is “Creative Placemaking?” ArtPlace defines creative placemaking as the intentional and integrated use of arts and cultural strategies to achieve place based, community development outcomes. This kind of work can be lead by artists, culture bearers, and arts organizations in a community, or by anyone else working in collaboration with such creative partners.

How do you define “Welcoming”? Welcoming communities connect new residents to their neighbors and to local government, creating a climate where immigrants and refugees become deeply involved in their community and invest their time, money, and hopes.

Being a welcoming community is about inviting new Americans to join in building strong communities, finding strength in diversity, and resisting fear and division.
